Rune does not execute shell commands, modify files on your machine, or run arbitrary code. Every action flows through controlled API endpoints with defined inputs and outputs.
Unlike tools that require local installation and shell access, Rune runs entirely server-side. No prompt injection can become arbitrary code execution. No risk of file deletion or credential theft.
The AI can only call tools you've explicitly configured — built-in capabilities, MCP servers, and API endpoints. Each tool has defined parameters and permissions. Nothing outside the toolset is reachable.
API keys and OAuth tokens are encrypted at rest and never exposed to the AI model. Tool calls execute server-side — the model sees results, not credentials.
Every tool call is logged with timestamp, user, tool name, parameters, and response status. Admins can review all tool activity across the organization.

Rune supports four types of tools: Built-in tools (web search, calculator, integrations) that work out of the box. MCP servers for connecting Model Context Protocol services. API Manual — define any REST API by hand with endpoints, parameters, and auth. API Auto — paste an OpenAPI spec URL and actions are generated automatically. You can also describe an API in chat and Rune will create the tool for you. All tool types work identically from the chat — just ask and Rune calls the right tool.
